yoga lifestyle internship
Immerse yourself in yoga and green living by learning and working as an karma yoga intern at the Prama Institute, located only 20 minutes from Asheville, North Carolina. Our program is a living yoga training, giving you direct experience of yoga and meditation, communication skills and teamwork, biopsychology, organic gardening, and green construction. Come join our institute in creating a healthy society by supporting sustainable individual and social practices that promote the welfare of all beings.
What You Will Learn and Practice During Your Internship Program:
Yoga Lifestyle and Philosophy
You’ll be immersed in living your yoga through the practices of hatha yoga and meditation, taught by experienced teachers. These ancient practices expand awareness, develop contentment, and develop resilience in adapting to a fast changing world. Classes on the spiritual philosophy of yoga, biopsychology, and yoga detox are also held regularly.
Karma Yoga—Community Service
Your internship includes 4-5 hours of daily Karma Yoga to foster non-attachment and team spirit—both integral aspects of personal growth. What is karma yoga? It is selfless service to the earth and the community. Karma Yoga at the Prama Institute includes gardening, trail development, food preparation, landscaping, cleaning, office work, and other maintenance tasks. Other activities may be assigned according to interns’ special skills, such as marketing, design and advertising, or program development.
Sustainability
Opportunities abound for learning and practicing principles of organic agriculture, horticulture, and biodynamic farming. You will also learn about the current models of green built homes on the land and participate in seminars and projects on green construction and landscaping.
Community Building Group
During weekly group meetings interns will create a cohesive and supportive spirit of team building by effectively addressing personal and collective issues within the internship community. Dr. Sid Jordan, a career psychologist, will facilitate these.
Recreation
After establishing oneself in the lifestyle and rhythm of the Prama Institute, interns enjoy regular outings in the scenic and serene environment of southern Appalachia. Activities may include swimming, rafting, visiting hot springs, or hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Customization
Flexibility is built into the internship program so that your individual needs are met. Regular evaluation sessions will be held in group and one-on-one settings. Individual and group projects will be undertaken.
Duration and Additional Content of Programs
The internship programs typically last one month and are scheduled March-November. Interns are asked to participate in our native programs, including Yoga Detox, Yoga of Silence, and any others we offer. During months when there are no Prama Institute programs, additional seminars will be offered. A variety of other classes are available according to the interest of the participants, including: communication skills, conflict resolution, problem solving, leadership training, small group dynamics and group facilitation, mediation skills and individualized work-study programs.
Tuition
The cost of the program is $650. This includes accommodations, vegetarian meals, and classes. A non-refundable deposit of $50 should be included with the application, which goes towards the first month’s fee. Upon arrival at the Prama Institute, the remaining fees must be paid in full.
